Leaking taps can be a huge problem but easily fixed. When you are experiencing a leaking or dripping tap more often than not the tap washer needs replacing which is asimple process or the ceramic cartridge/valve seating is seated onto the tap incorrectly. If the tap is a mixer tap for either a bathroom or a kitchen esure you change both washers.

Removing the tap handles (headgear)

Firstly and most importantly you must turn of the flow of water to the taps. This can be turned of at the mains or service valves. QUICK TIP: Make sure the tap is turned fully on and put the plug into the plug hole to avoid losing any parts.

There are a number of methods to remove the handle. Depending on the tap type, you can either remove the hot/cold indicator, unscrew or lever off the cover of the tap to expose the retaining screw.

Unscrew the tap retaining screw either with a flat head screwdriver or an allen key depending on the tap type.
This will reveal a large brass nut that holds the ceramic cartridge in place onto the tap faucet. Do not force the nut as this may cause unnecessary damage to the tap. Support the tap from the strongest section and gradually tun the nut to release

If the is more resistance to opening the tap brass nut, apply a lubricant oli and leave to 10 minutes before re-attempting to unscrew the nut.

Replacing the washer or ceramic cartridge

If your taps are using ceramic cartridges then you will simply be able to lift the old cartridge out and replace with an equivalent version. Please ensure you research into good quality tap cartridges.

If it reveals a washer as the mechanism, usin a screwdriver unscrew. Again, if there is difficulty in unscrewing you can reapply the techniques listed above.

After refitting the replacement part, you simply reverse the process to reassemble the bathroom or kitchen taps.
